Her eyes burned with rage, two embers kept alight even through the screaming. She snapped, slapping after hours of howling tears and he stopped, more from shock than satisfaction. That is how it began.
They had found his tiny body, broken and abused, cigarettes stubbed out on his infant chest in a dumpster behind Costless. The trial was brief; the mob seethed around the courthouse. She could hear them inside her concrete cage.
Throat cut, a savage gash from ear to ear, collapsing in the line for the showers: the bright-edged shiv humanity’s judgement, society’s revenge. Was it retribution? Or mercy?
