Hey, y’all! My latest piece is up on Atlas Obscura –
Before Radios, Pilots Navigated by Giant Concrete Arrows –
a little piece about an oft-forgotten piece of history.
Well done Chris. Keep those Atlas Obscura pieces coming.
Thanks Glen, I will – articles like this one let me keep flexing my writing muscles, while researching the random little things I find interesting.
Perfectly put Chris. The double-edged writing pleasure you describe sounds like killing the proverbial two birds with the one stone.
It is indeed! And I get paid, as well as feeling as though I’ve accomplished something. It’s just about perfect.
‘Paid’. ‘Perfect’. Yeh, as writers everywhere would agree, those two words definitely go together!
Here is a concrete arrow still visible in the New Forest National Park, in southern England. It has a compass next to it, and was used on a practice bombing range during WWII to aim bombers to the target site – https://db.tt/pypfQ2x3
There are some really interesting sites left over from WWII in Great Britain, KP – I found out that some of the artificial towns (to divert German bombers) are still there too: http://www.atlasobscura.com/articles/the-counterfeit-paris-and-other-fake-cities-built-in-the-name-of-espionage
Fascinating stuff! Thanks
