New Toys

They heard the sirens before they saw the van, its voice carrying high above the forest. Wheat sprung like stubble from the field, and the heavy tread of the robot left dinosaurian footprints in the hard earth.

“Here they come, Micah, here they come!”

The sirens sang, shrill and demanding – Joshua laughed, his arm outstretched toward the oncoming police car.

“Let’s give ’em a warm welcome, eh, Josh?”

In one swift moment Joshua clenched his fist, and the robot pounced, launching itself at the flashing blue-and-red strobe lights before them.

Metal shrieked as it tore, deafening.

It drowned out the screams – the boys didn’t notice.

Finding the spaceship had been a lot of fun, but this new toy was even better.
