At the corner of Chicago & Evans she stands, waiting.
A pirouette, perfectly executed.
A gracious bow, although you can see the tension beneath the perfect smile, you can see the boa constrictor muscles tightening, coiling, flexing in her shoulders – as though she’s nervous, on debut before the phantom applause.
She seems to fade as you approach her, her glamour wearing thin – it’s been years since the ballet, last toured, and still the ghost dances, near forgotten.
Written for this week’s Friday Fictioneers‘ photo-prompt.
Dear Chris,
A lament for the ghost of the dancer. Well done. Good detail mining with the address. Adds a note of realism to the story.
Aloha,
Doug
Thanks, Doug, glad you liked it!
I like your take on the photo and the wistful tone!
Dear Chris,
A poignant tale of past glories and wistful present.
Shalom,
Rochelle
Simply fab.
I wonder what made her choose this location to haunt and what might allow her to rest. I could feel her ghostly presence.

I absolutely adore the descriptions of her body movements, they’re incredible.
A provocative concept: the well-developed, athletic body seen as a ghostly apparition–you’ve done it well..
Well done Chris, I like the idea of loss that you portray.
Wonderful – ghost dancer – you describe a ballerina’s strong back muscles perfectly!
I wonder if this corner was where the dancer met her demise?
Beautiful description of a fine dancer–even if she is a ghost! Poignant story, well done.
A ghost that’s more sad than scary. Nice job.
Very unusual, haunting take on the prompt, nicely done.
I do like a bit of ghastliness. This was ethereal, moving, poignant. Lovely job.
a dancing ghost indeed, great writing
What a lovely character sketch. I wondered too if she were a ballerina.
Our enigmatic female is encouraging lots of very inventive ghostly tales this week, like yours. One of our past houses was haunted. My husband saw ‘her’ eventually. I was entertained by your story. Well done.
Yes, a nice, nostalgic lament…real emotion there…
This was a beautiful piece, Chris.
Nicely done! Great feelings in it.
Very clever. Great atmosphere. There is something sad about ballet dancers and I think you’ve captured some of it.
Hauntingly satisfying.
Great piece! A spooky nostalgia…
A great tale. I love the tension of being left behind…past glory fading.
